The First Trade Wasn’t His<\/h2>

Some beginnings become more meaningful when they’re shared.<\/i><\/em><\/p>

The house smelled of fresh jasmine, sandalwood and the unmistakable sweetness of homemade Diwali sweets.<\/p>

It was the Saturday before Diwali, and twenty-seven-year-old Arjun had been given a task he had successfully avoided for several years.<\/p>

“Clean the cupboard in the study,” his father had instructed. “And don’t just move everything from one shelf to another like last time.”<\/p>

Arjun laughed. His father, Srinivasan, had always been particular about two things: keeping his accounts in order and making sure the family celebrated Diwali together.<\/p>

As Arjun pulled out old files and dusty folders, a small red notebook slipped from between two books.<\/p>

Its cover was faded. The pages had turned yellow. On the first page, written carefully in blue ink, were the words:<\/p>

“Appa, what’s this?” Arjun called out.<\/p>

“Ah. I wondered where that had gone.”<\/p>

He took the notebook from Arjun’s hands and sat down.<\/p>

“Your grandfather gave me this on my first Diwali after I started working.”<\/p>

“A diary?”<\/p>

“Not exactly. My first investment ledger.”<\/p>

Arjun looked puzzled.<\/p>

“You maintained your investments in a notebook?”<\/p>

His father laughed.<\/p>

“We didn’t have trading apps, mobile notifications or charts on our phones. We had newspapers, brokers, telephone calls and a great deal of patience.”<\/p>

He turned a few pages.<\/p>

There were dates, company names, quantities and amounts. Some entries had been crossed out. Others had small handwritten notes beside them.<\/p>

“Your grandfather believed Diwali was a good time to begin something meaningful,” Srinivasan continued. “Every year, he would perform a small puja for his account books. He called it the beginning of a new financial chapter.”<\/p>

“Did he make a lot of money?”<\/p>

Srinivasan shook his head.<\/p>

“Sometimes he made money. Sometimes he lost it. But he never confused an auspicious beginning with a guaranteed outcome.”<\/p>

Arjun looked up.<\/p>

“Then why was it so important to him?”<\/p>

“Because the occasion reminded him to begin with intention. And to take responsibility for what came next.”<\/p>

That evening, as the family prepared diyas for the balcony, Arjun returned to the subject.<\/p>

“Appa, I’ve been meaning to ask you something.”<\/p>

Srinivasan looked up from the newspaper.<\/p>

“That sounds serious.”<\/p>

“I’ve started earning properly now. I’ve been saving every month. A few of my friends have started investing, and I’ve been thinking about it too.”<\/p>

“Good.”<\/p>

“But I don’t know where to begin.”<\/p>

His father folded the newspaper.<\/p>

“That’s a better starting point than pretending you know everything.”<\/p>

Arjun smiled.<\/p>

“One friend keeps sending me stock recommendations. Another says I should start trading immediately. Everyone seems to have an opinion.”<\/p>

“And what do you think?”<\/p>

“That’s the problem. I don’t know enough to have one.”<\/p>

Srinivasan leaned back.<\/p>

“It was,” his father replied. “That’s probably why it helped.”<\/p>

For the next hour, they spoke about the markets.<\/p>

They discussed risk, patience, diversification and the difference between investing and trading. Srinivasan explained that even a carefully considered decision could go wrong, and that understanding one’s financial circumstances mattered more than following someone else’s excitement.<\/p>

At one point, Arjun asked the question his father had been expecting.<\/p>

“So, what should I buy first?”<\/p>

“Before you decide what to buy, learn why you’re buying it.”<\/b><\/strong><\/p>

Arjun fell silent.<\/p>

It was not the answer he had hoped for.<\/p>

But perhaps it was the answer he needed.<\/p>

The following morning, Arjun found his father sitting at the dining table with his laptop.<\/p>

“What are you doing, Appa?”<\/p>

“Looking at the Muhurat Trading schedule.”<\/p>

“Muhurat Trading?”<\/p>

“You’ve heard of it?”<\/p>

“Of course. But I never understood why the stock market opens on Diwali.”<\/p>

Srinivasan explained how Muhurat Trading had become a cherished tradition in India’s financial markets, reflecting the belief that Diwali marks a time for fresh beginnings.<\/p>

“It’s a special trading session,” he said. “But remember, the market doesn’t become less risky just because the occasion is auspicious.”<\/p>

Arjun nodded.<\/p>

“So you still follow it every year?”<\/p>

“Whenever I can. Sometimes I participate. Sometimes I simply watch. It reminds me of your grandfather.”<\/p>

There was a brief silence.<\/p>

Then Srinivasan turned the laptop towards his son.<\/p>

“Would you like to learn how to open your own account?”<\/p>

Arjun looked surprised.<\/p>

“You’re finally letting me into your secret world?”<\/p>

“There is no secret world,” his father laughed. “Only things you haven’t learned yet.”<\/p>

Together, they went through the account-opening process on Flattrade. Srinivasan explained the information being requested, the importance of reading the terms and the need to understand the platform before placing any orders.<\/p>

Arjun completed the required steps and submitted his application for verification.<\/p>

For the first time, the markets felt less like a confusing collection of numbers and more like something he could gradually understand.<\/p>

On Sunday, 8 November, the family gathered for Diwali.<\/p>

There were sweets on the table, lamps along the balcony and the familiar sounds of relatives calling to exchange wishes.<\/p>

In the study, Srinivasan had placed the old red notebook beside his laptop.<\/p>

Arjun noticed it immediately.<\/p>

“Still using that?”<\/p>

“Not for transactions,” his father said. “For memories.”<\/p>

They sat together as the special Muhurat Trading session approached.<\/p>

Arjun’s account-opening application was still being processed, so he would not be placing a trade that day.<\/p>

Then he closed the book and placed his hand on Arjun’s shoulder.<\/p>

“Your grandfather would have liked that.”<\/p>

Outside, the first diyas had begun to glow.<\/p>

And in that quiet little room, a tradition had found its way into another generation.<\/p>

Not through a stock recommendation.<\/p>

Not through a promise of wealth.<\/p>
