What are NRE and NRO accounts?
NRE stands for Non-resident external (NRE) accounts and NRO stands for Non-resident ordinary (NRO) accounts. These are the two types of bank accounts available for non-resident Indians (NRIs). NRE accounts are repatriable, i.e. funds can be transferred to foreign countries without any limitations. Funds in NRE accounts must be earned in a foreign country.
Meanwhile, NRO accounts are not repatriable completely. NRO account holders can repatriate up to USD 1 million in a financial year. Further, funds in the NRO account must earned in India.
